Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning vintage 7 alloy folded metal Singing Bowl, from Bengal, India.
Historians believe that the tradition of using singing bowls to produce sound was brought from India to Tibet and the Himalayas, along with the teachings of the Buddha, by the great tantric master Padmasambhava in the 8th century AD.
    Thus began
a tradition of their use worldwide for the purposes of meditation, music, relaxation, and personal well-being.
Traditionally, singing bowls are made of seven sacred metals which correspond to the seven sacred planets: gold (Sun), silver (Moon), mercury (Mercury), copper (Venus), tin (Jupiter), lead (Saturn), and itron (Mars). Historians also believe the knowledge to mix various metals to produce a singing sound originated in Asia in ancient times, and the harmonics of singing bowls have been used to induce meditation, relaxation, and to assist spiritual seekers in finding a state of enlightenment
    s
ince the time of the original Buddha, who lived in the fifth century B.C. They are created by hammering a flat sheet of metal over a form until it attains the shape of a bowl. The edges are then folded over and hammered smooth. To play them, or induce sound, they are struck or rubbed around the rim with a wooden mallet to produce an enthralling blend of harmonic resonance and rich overtones.
Antique singing bowls produce harmonic overtones creating an effect that is unique to the instrument. The subtle yet complex multiple harmonic frequencies are a special quality caused by variations in the shape of the hand made singing bowls. There are many different sizes of singing bowls. The final tone is determined by the size and thickness of the final bowl. This superb example measures 7.5 inches in width by 3.5 inches in height (19.0 cm by 8.89 cm). It is tuned to E-flat, with a B-flat overtone, and weighs 2lbs. The bowl is in very good condition and shows wear consistent with use and a dating to the mid-20th century. It would make a superb addition to any collection of Asian antiques.
